What pushes pay higher
It depends where you are in your career, and the answer changes more than most people expect.
In your first five years, it's the software and your eye for detail. Getting from junior to technician level comes down to really knowing your tools. Not just opening AutoCAD and Revit, but knowing the parts most people never touch, and knowing what happens to a model when it moves between platforms. Detail matters just as much. A drawing that's nearly right still gets picked up on site, and someone pays to fix it. Employers aren't paying you for speed. They're paying for drawings they don't have to check.
After five years, the software stops being the thing. This is where a lot of careers stall. Senior money gets paid for running a job: managing the project, talking to engineers and clients, owning the delivery when it goes wrong. We've seen plenty of draftspeople who are confident software users and still don't reach that pay bracket. Being good on the tools and being able to run the work aren't the same skill.
Unless you go deep instead. There's a second route, and it's worth knowing about. Specialise far enough that you become the person everyone comes to (Subject Matter Expert - SME), and you can get paid like a senior for your knowledge. It's a narrower path and it asks for real expertise, but it's a genuine one.
